Described as one of the best religious films ever made, Essene observes
the daily life in a Benedictine monastery and the resolution of conflict
when personal needs are weighed against the institutional and organizational
priorities of the community. Revealing the relationship of individual work
and worship to the group as a whole, the film shows the monks coping with
the same issues that arise in any community: rules, work, values, love,
and play. 1972, U.S., BW, 16mm, 86 minutes.
