"My name is Kaimay Yuen-Terry. Kaimay is my first name. It is easy to remember-if you think of Camay soap. It's not C-A-M-A-Y; it's K-A-I-M-A-Y. It's a Chinese name and Yuen is my maiden name, which I kept, and Terry, you guess, is Irish. I married an American Irish guy. So that's my name. I am originally from Hong Kong, but that seems a long time ago because I came when I was 18, after high school. I wanted to see the world. And that's what happened.
"It was a cultural shock in a very positive way. Because [I was] born and raised in Hong Kong, which is a small island with millions of people, I felt very, very squished-mentally, emotionally, physically, and I just really wanted to see the world. It's as simple as that, and the best way to do it is through education, and I was able to get a scholarship. My first stopping place was Oberlin College in Ohio, a small liberal arts [college], and after that I did graduate [studies at the] University of Chicago and entered a field [social work] that helped me to see and understand America more than I bargained for."
