Enjoy an evening of poetry and dance with this global Free Verse event featuring Walter Chakela from the Windybrow Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Laurie Carlos of the Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul.

South African playwright-director Chakela has been a member of the Congress of South African Writers (where he served as president for three years) and the Artistic Director of The Windybrow Centre for the Arts in Johannesburg since 1993. He has written more than 25 plays, including Isithukuthuku (Sweat), which was recently produced by Atlanta's 7 Stages theater company. He has also written children's books and books on theater. He will read from his poetry.

Actress-choreographer-writer-director Laurie Carlos created the role of Lady in Blue in Ntozake Shange's play for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf, and is renowned for her work with the New York-based dance-theater group Urban Bush Women. The recipient of many prestigious grants and awards, Carlos is currently Artistic Fellow at Penumbra Theatre Company. Dancers will perform as part of her reading.
