FRANCISCO’S CHINESE NEW YEAR’S PARADE
Celebrate
the New—Chinese
New Year that is— at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday program from 11
am–4 pm Saturday, February 1. Families will ring in the year of the goat during
a celebration featuring a performance by the CAAM Chinese Dance Company; an
art-making activity using bamboo brushes and monogram stamps to create
personalized New Year’s greetings; a screening of the lively documentary The
Dragon Wore Tennis Shoes, plus a rare screening of shorts from the Shanghai
Animation Studio; and a guided tour of the permanent collection. Activities are
free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information about

Auditorium
CAAM Chinese Dance Theater will perform six short pieces taking
inspiration from animals and nature. There will also be a chance for the
audience to participate at the end of the performance.

Bringing
in the spirit of the new, The Dragon Wore Tennis Shoes is a lively
documentary highlighting San Francisco’s annual Chinese New Year’s Parade
(starring a 120-foot golden dragon). In addition, enjoy a rare screening of
shorts from the Shanghai Animation Studio.

Art
Lab
Make
your own bamboo brush and monogram stamp, then use them to create a personal
New Year’s wish using inks and papers. Led by Ilene Mojsilov.

History of Modern Western Art Washed in the Washing Machine for Two Minutes
by Huang Yong Ping, on view in Gallery 6. Pick up a free family activity guide
