Listen to Happy Apple

An irresistible evening of new sounds and masterful performances by some of the leading musicians and composers in the Twin Cities. Revisit the Walker's much-loved Strange Bedfellows concert combining the virtuosity of Gao Hong (pipa) and Anthony Cox (bass). This time, the intriguing mix of jazz-based improvisation and pipa pyrotechnics ride atop the South Indian percussion wizardry of Marcus Wise (tabla). Next up will be an intermezzo puppet performance by Michael Sommers with his enigmatic Homage to Louise Bourgeois. Local new-jazz favorite Happy Apple follows with a set that includes three new Headwaters commissions. Its exhilarating mix of free-flowing jazz and seamless synchronicity is propelled by a palpable punk-rock verve. Happy Apple is Dave King (percussion), Michael Lewis (saxophones), and Erik Fratzke (electric bass).
