Red Beads,a work-in-progress, is an operatic amalgam of music, movement, and puppetry written and directed by Lee Breuer (Gospel at Colonus, Peter and Wendy), one of the country's leading theatrical innovators. Japanese composer Ushio Torikai and her quartet will perform her score for voice (featuring the Twin Cities Women's Choir) and traditional Western, Eastern, and electronic instrumentation, while New York-based master puppeteers Basil Twist and Cathy Shaw will design and execute the puppetry, working with local puppeteers. Commissioned by the Walker, the work is adapted from a Russian folktale that centers on a haunting mythological fantasy about the passage of "feminine mystique" from mother to daughter. The performances are presented as part of the company's two-week developmental residency with the Walker. Copresented with Red Eye in association with 3 Legged Race. For information about a puppeteering master class with Basil Twist and Cathy Shaw, call (612) 375-7624.
