MARIA (PEASANT ELEGY)
A stunning film in two acts, Maria begins as a portrait of a peasant woman laboring in the fields; her efforts and spirit are matched by the work's vibrant, earthy colors--gold, green, and red. In the second section, shot in black and white after Maria's death, Sokurov returned to the village, where he screened the original footage in tribute for an audience saddened by her passing. 1978-1988, Russia, video (original format 35mm), in Russian with English subtitles, 41 minutes.

ORIENTAL ELEGY
The first work in Sokurov's Japanese video cycle, Oriental Elegy voyages into an unreal realm beyond documentary footage into a mystical and misty village. "Oriental Elegy is an attempt to find the sources of the very image itself, an attempt to find them beyond painting, beyond literature," explains Sokurov. 1996, Russia/Japan, video, in Russian with English subtitles, 45 minutes.
