On the frontiers of cinematic possibilities, experimental filmmakers from the 1940s to the 1970s created a new American cinema that grew out of the emerging subcultures. Influenced by ideological and aesthetic shifts and politicized by the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam War, they were unified by their emphasis on personal vision. Each filmmaker created a new film grammar, rejecting the language of Hollywood. The Walker Art Center is pleased to present work from the Edmond R. Ruben Film Study Collection,which contains several hundred titles, with a monthlong program emphasizing American experimental film.
