Walker Art Center | The Home Show

HOUS-[E, ES, ING] Architecture Studio is a unique collaboration between the Walker Art Center and the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (CALA) at the University of Minnesota. This in-gallery studio is both an interactive exhibition to explore and a place where students and faculty from the University's Department of Architecture will be meeting and working throughout the summer. The integration of exhibition and production, of gallery and work space, of observation and interaction provides rich oppor- tunities to see, hear, and participate in the architectural design process.

The title - HOUS-[E, ES, ING] - refers to various forms of domestic spaces: "house" as a single object, like the single-family home; "houses" as a series of similar multiples; and "housing" as a larger structure for many people. Throughout the summer, students will be addressing urban domestic design issues by working on sited projects in and around the Twin Cities.

Throughout the Architecture Studio, students engage in four primary types of activities, each of which informs and is informed by the others:

Research January 5 - April 27
Participate in Public forums, community roundtable discussions, class meetings, and conversations with gallery visitors, and conduct independent research.

Body Work June 4 - 15
Construct the critical tools to use throughout the summer.

Groundwork June 16 - 29
Create the armatures that describe the urban situations for the projects.

HOUS-work June 30 - August 19
Develop ideas into spatial form.

Your input is welcome and will contribute greatly to the success of this experimental Studio project. The students' working process in the form of drawings, models, and written notes is on view for you to explore in the gallery. On the Web site this information will be recorded in student journals.
