Date: 11/25/98 9:22 PM Received: 11/28/98 3:37 PM From: Philippe Vergne, philippe.vergne@walkerart.org To: Louis Mazza, louis.mazza@walkerart.org Morning on the phone and with my e-mail. Then left for a meeting at the MOT (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo). Of course I did not resist. The photo of the little school girls in navy blue uniforms with white socks. One more cliché. But, who could resist? The MOT is quite an impressive building. One really understands it is a museum. It is just there. But it is a nice building. Visited the galleries first. A British art exhibition: Sam Taylor-Wood, Willie Doherty, Douglas Gordon, Sarah Lucas, Georgina Starr... And a Manga exhibition. Very well documented and beautiful display. Wall-size blowups, hanging screens. Took some snap shots of their info rooms just for future reference. Nice little booths for using computers or to seeing videos, around a little plaza. Then I met with Kunio Yaguchi, Chief Curator of the MOT. I found out that he was really into Let's Entertain and about to host it, BUT, the bad economical situation in Japan is not good for his budget, SO he had to reconsider his decision. Too bad. So sad. I honestly liked the spaces. But it is for 2000 or 2001, And according to Japanese media the economy should be better in 2000. So I did not commit suicide in his office. He introduced me to Junichi Shioda, who, if I read his card correctly is also Chief Curator. I am lost. Two Chief Curators? Anyway good conversation. I'll come back to see the collection and have a longer conversation with Mr. Shioda. I rushed in a taxi to meet with Shu Lea Cheang in Shibuya. She is the filmmaker who did an internet installation at the Walker with Bryant Lake Bowl a few years ago. It was quite funny. We decided to meet in Shibuya, where 75,000 people decide to meet everyday at the same time. So of course it was a major mistake. Impossible to find each other and of course we've never met before. To make things easy. So we brought our little cell phones. -Where are you?-I am in front of the big video screen. -So am I. -OK, don't move I'll find you. 5 minutes later: -So where are you really? -Oops, sorry, I am above the video screen. -Good, I am coming. 7 minutes later: -Which video screen? -Ho, ok, don't move. I coming now. We met after 20 minutes. I realized that I saw her the day before in the street and noticed her hair do. We had a drink and she told me about her new project: a porn remake of Blade Runner. I left because I had to run and meet Emmanuelle to go to a dinner party to some friends of her. It was just a great dinner. The host was Mr. Tsusuki (spelling, not sure). He is a writer and a journalist who published recently a book called Roadside Japan. The book which took him 6 years to do is an inventory of all the strange and weird place in Japan. The most kitsch gaz station. The most stupid public sculpture. The Las Vegas hot spring in the middle of Japan, the Frog Museum. He is very funny and fascinating. He is a great cook and a fine wine amateur. He also invited Yoshiko Isshiki, who is the agent for Araki and Morimura. We had agreat conversation about artists. A very sweet one that we concluded, laughing, by finding out that she hates what I like, and that hates what she likes. Of course I missed the curfew at the IH and end up on the floor at Emmanuelle's. |
