Speedrunning and Recam Films
Immediately upon Quake's release by id Software in 1996 gamers began to play through its levels as fast as possible, sharing recordings of their feats with others, trying to beat each other's times. Known as "speedrunning," these films served as the precursor to the more narrative films that would follow. "Scourge Done Slick" is an example of one of the finest speedrunning films ever produced. "Da L33t Faust" (1997), a recam of gameplay in Quake 1 by the clan Die Fette Faust, is an example of some of the early demo recording that was created to promote a clan's particular style of play and playing prowess.
