Emma Amos is a painter and printmaker who explores the renovation of American history and art history and the struggle for freedom of expression. With paintings such as The Overseer; Malcolm X Morley, Matisse and Me; and Standing Out; Amos has created works that demand a consideration of the ways in which the politics of representation have historically constrained the visions and legacies of black artists. According to writer-critic bell hooks, Amos' is the "art of insurrection." This talk is presented in partnership with the Women's Art Registry of Minnesota (WARM) and the Black Art Alliance.
