After a series of studio films that some would say led him astray from independent
filmmaking, Van Sant returns with a sense of rediscovery and experimentation
that marked his early work. Gerry, shot in long takes in the desert
by cinematographer Harris Savides, was improvised by its stars (Matt Damon
and Casey Affleck). The result is compellingly complex yet mesmerizingly
simple. Including a minimalist piano score by Arvo Pärt, the film follows
two men named Gerry who are lost in the desert and moving, breathing, even
walking in unison through a physical and mental labyrinth on their desperate
search for a way out. The Village Voice proclaimed Gerry to
be Van Sant's "most provocative film yet." 2002, U.S., color, 35mm, 103
minutes.
