FIDEL Directed by Estela Bravo Introduced by University of Minnesota Professor August Nimtz To some, Cuban president Fidel Castro is a champion of the poor and powerless; to others he is a ruthless dictator. Examining the life of one of the most influential and controversial figures of our time, this documentary covers 40 years of Cuban history and remarks on the difficulty of maintaining revolutionary ideals in today's world. Estela Bravo obtained rare interviews with Castro and exclusive footage from the Cuban State Archives in which he jokes with such friends as Nelson Mandela and celebrates his birthday with the Buena Vista Social Club. Adding to the story are interviews with Alice Walker, Sydney Pollack, Muhammad Ali, Harry Belafonte, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and many others who comment on the revolution, Cuban history, and Castro's little-known private life. 2001, U.S., color/BW, 35mm, in English and Spanish with English subtitles, 91 minutes. A DISCUSSION FOLLOWS THE SCREENING.
