Made in part to counter the portrayal of Jean-Michel Basquiat in Julian
Schnabel's eponymous film, Edo Bertoglio in fact began Downtown 81
in the winter of 1980-1981, but lost the footage for 19 years when his producers
went under. Despite its documentary approach, Downtown 81 is fiction,
portraying the young Basquiat as a charming and naive young artist in the
days before his star ascended in the art world. The cast includes former
New York luminaries like DNA, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Jim Jarmusch,
Debbie Harry, Andy Warhol, and the very young Vincent Gallo. 2000, U.S.,
color, 35mm, 75 minutes.
