"Even in disaster areas, as an architect I want to create beautiful buildings,"
says Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. "I want to move people and improve
people's lives. If I did not feel this way, it would be impossible to create
meaningful architecture and to make a contribution to society at the same
time." For this lecture, Ban discusses his remarkable body of work, which
includes the famous paper-tube structures Paper Loghouses, Paper
Church, and the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2000, as well as
his elegant and refined designs for residential and commercial projects.
Founded in 1985, Shigeru Ban Architects (SBA) focuses on material and structural
experimentation, striving to produce innovative solutions that result in
iconic projects such as Curtain Wall House, which became the main
image for the Museum of Modern Art's The Un-Private House exhibition
in 1999 (included in the Walker's 2000 exhibition The Home Show).
This lecture is worth 1.5 continuing education hours for AIA members.
