PIXOTE PIXOTE
(PIXOTE, A LEI DO MAIS FRACO)

7 PM
Directed by Hector Babenco
An unflinching portrait of São Paulo slum kids, Pixote is completely devoid of sentimentality, yet illuminated with lightning flashes of innocence, joy, and compassion. The film focuses on a group of homeless boys who are arrested during a routine "cleansing" of the city streets. Among them is Pixote, a baby-faced 10 year old, who experiences the brutalization of the juvenile justice system and emerges as an experienced hand at robbery and murder. 1980, Brazil, 120 minutes.
THE HOUR OF THE STAR THE HOUR OF THE STAR
(A HORA DA ESTRELA)

9 PM
Directed by Suzana Amaral
A lucid post-Cinema Novo work by one of the few women directors in Brazilian film, The Hour of the Star focuses on the misadventures (often comic) of an awkward young woman from the Northeast who searches for romance and fulfillment among the marginally employable denizens of São Paulo. Suzana Amaral focuses on both the tawdry details of her workaday life as well as her fantasy life, which is fueled by an unhealthy dose of popular culture. 1985, Brazil, 96 minutes.

CINEMA NOVO AND BEYOND IS PART OF A FILM TOUR ORGANIZED BY JYTTE JENSEN, THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MOMA), IN COLLABORATION WITH THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE, BRAZIL.
