The body's participation in the joyous communion of the soul with divinity can be seen in Praise House. The story is built on an exploration of a child's visions, which urge her to express her spiritual life by drawing pictures. As in her other pieces, Zollar emphasizes the search for a personal mode of communication with the spirit world. Praise House is inspired by the real-life story of Minnie Evans, an artist whose visions and communing with angels and spirits made her a "problem child" for her mother, who was caught in the throes of reality and the struggle for survival. Praise House is structured in two acts, "Gifting" [video clip] and "Draw or die" [video clip]. The cast consists of three central characters: Hannah, the young girl who is visited by spirits and inspired by them to draw; her mother; and her grandmother, the elder Hannah, who also enjoys a communion with the spirits and is her granddaughter's soul mate. The rest of the characters are denizens of the spirit world and often are the externalizations of Hannah's thoughts and feelings. Though Granny has passed away by the second act, she lives on in Hannah's mind, a powerful presence in her granddaughter's spiritual field. It is, in fact, Granny's spirit who guides Hannah toward a realm where these contradictory worlds can meet, where living and dying can be considered in terms of an infinite continuum. |

| What strikes us about Hannah's spiritual fervor is how it courses through her body, commanding its movements and the intensely intimate and personal quality of her faith. Hannah's mode of spirituality does not fall within even the dominion of the black church, which is more clearly represented in Momma, whose only relief from the drudgery of reality comes from her prayers. Moreover, Hannah's spiritual quest is inseparable from her artistic mission: she draws and, in the context of this piece, dances her spiritual visions [video clip]. This turning away from institutionalized expression of spirituality is a recurring theme in Zollar's work. | |||||||
