Why would anyone remake Psycho? According to Roger Ebert's 1998 review,
"Curious, how similar the new version is, and how different. If you have
seen Hitchcock's film, you already know the characters, the dialogue, the
camera angles, the surprises." Not only an experiment in filmmaking, but
also in terror, Van Sant makes the story's sexuality more explicit than
the original could be under the 1960 production code. With the assistance
of Wong Kar-wai's primary cinematographer, Christopher Doyle, he also changes
the look of the film from high-contrast black-and-white to a brilliantly
garish color palette uncommon to such dark narrative material. With Vince
Vaughn, Anne Heche, Viggo Mortensen, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, and
Robert Forester. 1998, U.S., color, 35mm, 104 minutes.
