Alex (Denis Lavant), a homeless wino, passes out in the street, and an affluent
couple in a luxury car run over his foot. Michele (Juliette Binoche), an
artist with deteriorating vision who has run away from her comfortable life,
witnesses the incident and sketches his portrait. The two see each other
on the Pont-Neuf bridge and later their relationship reaches a crescendo
during an ecstatic Bastille Day celebration involving cheap wine, firecrackers,
and a joyride down the Seine on a police boat. Carax's remarkable film combines
harsh social realities with gleeful romance, at times evoking L'Atalante
and City Lights but bursting with its own unforgettably wonderful
moments. 1991, France, in French with English subtitles, 126 minutes.
