WALKER ART CENTER AND THE MINNEAPOLIS SCULPTURE GARDEN

The Walker and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden are the focus of artist-led
summer classes for kids ages 3-14. Create paintings, prints, performance,
and photographs. Explore architecture and design. Culture Camp offers
young people an action-packed introduction to five arts organizations
in Minneapolis.

Dress for a mess and discover some of the many possibilities of makingart
with surprising natural materials. Explore the Minneapolis SculptureGarden,
then create miniature self-portraits, photo collages, watercolor sketchbooks,
and sculptures. During this class, children and adults join in outdoor
fun and creative play together. Led by Jennifer Kennedy
and Dara Sepkoski.

& UNDER: EXPLORING FANTASTICAL AND REAL GARDENS SOLD

$100 ($50 WALKER MEMBERS)
Find out who might live in a garden--worms, ladybugs, butterflies, fairies,
even you--as you become an artful gardener for the week. Make special
two- and three-dimensional environments, whimsical miniature gardens complete
with fairy protectors and underground bug headquarters, and a variety
of indoor and outdoor drawing and papier-mâchè projects.
Parents are invited to a presentation and reception at the end of the
last class. Led by Sara Church.

CULTURE
CAMP
MONDAY-FRIDAY,
AUGUST 13-17, 2001, 9 AM-3 PM
$240 ($180 FOR MEMBERS OF ANY OF THE FIVE PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS)
Spend a day at each of five arts organizations: The Walker Art Center,
the Children's
Theatre Company, Zenon Dance Company, Minnesota
Center for Book Arts, and Highpoint Center for Printmaking. Create
videos, handmade paper, engravings, books, performances, and dances.At
the Walker, culture campers will use digital video cameras and iMovie
software to make a short film with Mike Hazard that
explores art from many different angles. Parents are invited to a presentation
at the end of each class. Participants must provide their own transportation
to each institution and bring a bag lunch each day. Three sections are
offered; limited to 18 participants per section. Registration begins April
17 and is through the Walker Art Center box office only. A full schedule
and directions will be mailed to participants.

EYE
TO EYE: PORTRAITS AND PLACES
MONDAY-FRIDAY,
JULY 9-13, 2001, 10 AM-3 PM
$180 ($100 WALKER MEMBERS)
Investigate still and moving figures in the exhibition Alice
Neel and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Be the artist and the
model as you learn about line, color, and proportion using pastels, ink,
and paints. Bring a bag lunch. Parents are invited to a presentation and
reception at the end of the last class. Led by Ilene
Krug Mojsilov.

IT UP
MONDAY-FRIDAY,
AUGUST 6-10, 2001, 10 AM-3 PM

During this exiting week, use everyday objects and digital cameras to
experiment with a variety of techniques incorporating collage, paint,
and photos. After seeing a selection of portraits in the exhibition Alice
Neel, create expressive and personal mixed-media artworks. Bring
a bag lunch. Parents are invited to a presentation and reception at the
end of the last class. Led by Alexa Horochowski.

DESIGN
AND STRUCTURE
MONDAY-FRIDAY,
JULY 23-27, 2001, 10 AM-3 PM
$180 ($100 WALKER MEMBERS)
How do architects find ideas for unique yet functional building designs?
In this class, students are introduced to the field of architecture through
design, drawing, and model-building techniques. Sketch "characters" from
portraits in the exhibition Alice
Neel, then plan and construct model homes, offices, or a museum
space for these specific clients. Investigate shelterlike sculptures in
the Garden by Jackie Ferrara, Atelier
van Lieshout, and Nari
Ward. Bring a bag lunch. Parents are invited to a presentation and
reception at the end of the last class. Led by Aimee
LaLone and Isabel Chavier.

Enrollment is limited, so register early. Classes may be canceled one
week prior to the start date of each class if enrollment is insufficient.
Culture Camp registration begins April 17 and is through the Walker Art

Full and partial scholarships are available on a need basis for several
classes through the Walker Art Center's Explore Program. For more information,

REFUNDS
AND WITHDRAWALS
Fees are nonrefundable. A full refund will be granted if the class is
canceled by the Walker Art Center.
ABOUT
THE INSTRUCTORS
ISABEL
CHAVIER
is currently a graduate student in architecture at the University
of Minnesota and participated in the Design Studio portion of the
Walker exhibition The Home Show (summer 2000).
SARA CHURCH (MA in art education, College
of Saint Catherine) is a local artist who has taught many workshops
for children at the Bloomington Arts Center.
MIKE HAZARD, a.k.a. Media Mike (Culture
Camp at the Walker) is an artist-in-residence at the Center for International
Education. He teaches people of all ages how to make lively videos
and makes video portraits of lively people. He is just finishing Eugene
McCarthy: I'm Sorry I Was Right, and just beginning a self-portrait
at midlife, Solar Power & Moonshine.
ALEXA HOROCHOWSKI (MFA, University of
Michigan) is an installation artist who has exhibited her work locally
at Franconia Sculpture Park, No Name Exhibitions, the Minnesota Artist
Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and The Phipps
Center for the Arts. She is a 2001 recipient of a Jerome Fellowship
for Visual Artists, and currently teaches at the College of Visual
Arts, St. Paul.
AIMEE LALONE has a liberal arts background
and is currently a graduate student in architecture at the University
of Minnesota.
JENNIFER KENNEDY (MA, art education,
College of Saint Catherine) is the Family Programs Assistant in the
Department of Education and
Community Programs at the Walker Art Center.
ILENE KRUG MOJSILOV (MFA, University
of Minnesota) is the Art Lab Coordinator at the Walker Art Center
as well as a painter and an MSAB Roster Artist. She has conducted
numerous workshops for children at the Walker and statewide in the
public schools.
DARA HENNING SEPKOSKI (MA, art education,
The School, The Art Institute of Chicago) is the Family Programs Manager
in the Department of Education and Community Programs at the Walker
