Frank Gaard, Installation Wall

Transcript

The way that I build things is like collage. Early on, when I was making the notebooks, drawing, I kept other notebooks that are almost all collage and drawing. I’ve always felt that collage was the great innovation of modern practice. This is a collage—these CDs are glued on to the canvas. But to do collage is kind of like doing magic tricks. You have to do it the way Cornell does it, where you’re not really conscious it’s just some junk that somebody’s putting together and creating a mood and a feeling. Understanding my work, in a way, does take some insight into the idea that collage is a really radical innovation, although it doesn’t seem like it now. But I can remember when I first saw Rauschenberg’s. There was something about seeing real shit glued to something else—tires and birds and things. I think it turns the little wheels. I think the one way to look at my work is through the prism of collage and movable parts, the movable collage.
