A lot of times, I think the things that artists make are made to amuse them. I remember reading about Duchamp liking to spin the wheel on his bicycle wheel and look through it. He said it reminded him of a fireplace, watching the spokes go by. I think that there is an element of that in a lot of artists’ work. I always think of Cy Twombly liking to look at his work, laughing, even, that it’s so goofy the things that he dreams up, the scrawls and swirls and stuff.
I think I was trying to make something that was like Kenneth Anger’s _Pleasure Dome_, something that would be inviting and mystifying, but also intriguing and also repellent and also sort of soft and difficult. I wanted something that was, like, encyclopedic that way in terms of pleasure and delight.
