Everybody has something they like. I’ve always liked pink. Some of my first successes in art school were with using pink. Also, I have three sons. They were very pink when they entered this world. It has a peaceful connotation as a color. It’s something that maybe some people don’t like. But, basically, I think there is a comfort in it. It’s like a pink blanket or a pink costume that the little girl wears. It’s gendered and it’s not gendered. You can put a little boy in a pink outfit. I just think it’s a pretty color. It’s a state of red that is changed with the white.
I think art is about pleasure. It’s a way of communicating other ideas, but using a pleasurable means. I think, too, it’s something to do with our sexuality—that our genitals are pink; our lips are pink. It is drawing attention to color, which is always good. Just the same way that sculpture draws attention to space and volume, painting draws attention to color or its absence or its presence. I’ve done a lot of pink things.
