Part of Films by Sharon Lockhart
In a choreographed action staged by Lockhart and Stephen Galloway of the Ballett Frankfurt, girls in a suburban Japanese middle school perform basketball drills in synchronized preparation for a game that never happens. Each of the six 10-minute shots are framed by the proscenium stage at the back of the gym, which heightens the notion of the action as performance rather than sport, fiction instead of documentary. 1997, U.S./Japan, color, 16mm, 63minutes.
This film has been described as “a fixed-frame landscape painting” in which two Japanese farm¬ers perform an intricately choreographed routine based on the seasonal work of mulching a field. 2003, U.S./Japan, color, 16mm, 32 minutes.
