Free First Saturday

Gallery admission is free for everyone on the first Saturday of each month. Families can enjoy live performances, films, gallery adventures, and hands-on art-making from 10 am–3 pm. Activities recommended for ages 6–12.

Gallery activities, art-making, games, and films reveal many ways that everyday objects are reimagined in contemporary art. Surprises and artistic experimentation await families in the Art Lab, where you’ll start with one thing and end up with something entirely different.

Activity: Fast & Slow—Things on the Go!

10 am–3 pm
Cargill Lounge
Use ordinary materials to see how fast you can speed things up and slow them down. The Bakken Museum’s ball-roll and rocket-shot challenges will help you explore the intersection of art, engineering, and science.

Art-making for the Entire Family: Tinker and Tweak

10 am–3 pm
Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Surprise yourself with something that starts out one way and becomes something else. Consider the experiment as an adventure with an unplanned yield.

Film: The Lost Thing

10 am–3 pm
U.S. Bank Orientation Lounge
This academy award winning animated short film, based on the book The Lost Thing, is about a young man who encounters a creature that no one else seems to notice. In the man’s quest to discover what the creature is and where it belongs, he uncovers a world hiding just around the corner. Directed by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann.
