Despair Be Damned: New Music and Dance from the Congo

Part of 2011-2012 Performing Arts Season

Violent conflict and unimaginable national hardship can give rise to unexpectedly inspired art, and after decades of civil war, corruption, and economic turmoil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is producing tense and cathartic work with themes that are universal and deeply human. This mini-festival brings two of the Central African country’s most exciting contemporary ensembles to the Twin Cities.

Kicking it all off on Thursday, September 22 is an evening of free activities that include the Midwest preview of the awardwinning National Geographic Cinematic Ventures film Benda Bilili! and a free gallery talk with Faustin Linyekula, setting the stage for his opening in the McGuire Theater the next night.

This series is a project of the Africa Contemporary Arts Consortium, a coalition of 11 diverse arts institutions advancing a dynamic exchange of arts and ideas between artists, arts organizations, cultural, and other institutions of Africa and the United States.
