Though it’s not a documentary, the landmark film The Battle of Algiers (1966, 35mm, 121 minutes) has astonishing relevance today as a case study in modern warfare and terrorist attacks. In 1992, Pontecorvo revisits locations from that film in Gillo Pontecorvo’s Return to Algiers (1992, video, 58 minutes), a documentary by his son.
This double-feature screening includes The Battle of Algiers at 6 pm and Gillo Pontecorvo’s Return to Algiers at 8:15 pm, followed by a discussion with Professor John Mowitt, Cultural Studies & Comparative Literature, University of Minnesota.
