Free First Saturday: Experimental Expressions

Celebrate artists who bend boundaries of live performance, film, and visual art. Find new ways to create meaning and curiosity of your own through art-making, gallery explorations, and chance encounters.

Gallery admission is free for everyone on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 5 pm, with a variety of family activities scheduled from 10 am to 3 pm.

Activity: Shimmer and Shine

Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab, 10 am–3 pm
Join artist Margaret Pezalla Granlund as she transforms the Art Lab and ingeniously investigates light. Wander through a luminous forest, play with infinite reflections, and witness the world in new and different ways. Materials provided by Lyle Signs, Inc.

Activity: Light It Up!

Cargill Lounge, 10 am–3 pm
Design your own brilliant structure using lights and a variety of transparent materials. This activity is led by arts instructor Alexandra Waters.

Film: Sainte Barbe

U.S. Bank Orientation Lounge, 10 am–3 pm
Beautiful puppet animation tells a moving story of a grandson and his grandfather, whose bushy black beard that seems endowed with magic powers. Directed by Claude Barras and Cédric Louis. 2007, 8 minutes.

Gallery Activity: UV Impression

Gallery 4, 11 am–2 pm Meet up with a tour guide in the exhibition Midnight Party to explore how artists experiment with light.

Family Workshop: Cool Music for Kids! The Sounds of Laurie Anderson, 1 pm

Free, but tickets required; tickets available in the Hennepin Lobby on November 3 from 10 am

A rare treat for the whole family. Get the inside scoop on electronic music and experimental performance from a legendary musician and composer. Laurie Anderson is a poet, visual artist, filmmaker, and a music pioneer who also invents ingenious gadgets. Did you know she was NASA’s first artist-in-residence? Anderson shares secrets about creating her unique musical sounds for violin and voice.

Note: This workshop is intended chiefly for children under age 18; adults must be accompanied by a minor.
