Free First Saturday: The Big Screen

Join us for an exciting day of kids’ films from around the world—on the big screen! Enjoy free gallery admission and family fun for all on the first Saturday of every month. Activities designed for kids ages 6 to 12 are offered from 10 am to 3 pm.

Short Films: Animated Adventures, 11 am and 1 pm

Walker Cinema
Doors open 30 minutes prior to screening; seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Program length: 60 minutes.

    What happens when a writer exchanges his old typewriter for a computer? Vivaldi’s musical theme “La Folia” is the accompaniment for this whimsical drama between an author and a bit of digital information inside his laptop. Directed by Juanma Sánchez Cervantes. Spain, 2013, 10 minutes.

  • Bombus Confusus
    A clumsy, chubby bumblebee with a big appetite is trying to make friends. But making friends with a group of bees is no easy matter! Directed by Anna Habermehl. Germany, 2012, 5 minutes.

  • Donald
    As Donald the Highlander walks through the Scottish lowlands, he causes a stir. Instead of trousers, he’s wearing a kilt. Directed by Daniel Acht. Germany, 2012, 6 minutes.

  • The Little Red Paper Ship
    A girl folds a piece of paper into a boat and sends it off into the wide ocean. It’s headed on a journey to discover new land—a journey that will change it forever. Directed by Aleksandra Zareba. Germany/Poland, 2013, 13 minutes.

  • Lure
    A fisherman waits all day in his tiny boat for a tug on his fishing line. While he wishes for a big fish, he winds up catching a small one instead. Soon after he releases it back into the water, strange things begin to happen. Directed by Dinko Kumanovic. Croatia, 2011, 3 minutes.

  • Mushroom Monster
    The hungry Mushroom Monster pursues his dreams and roams the swampy landscape, looking for the biggest mushroom ever. Directed by Aleksander Nordaas. Norway, 2013, 6 minutes.

  • My Strange Grandfather
    A young girl is frustrated by her grandfather and his eccentric habits, particularly his interest in collecting junk from a nearby beach. Directed by Dina Velikovskaya. Russia, 2011, 9 minutes.

Art-Making: Marionette Magic, 10 am–3 pm

Let your imagination soar as you create string puppets and tell short stories on a stage.

Activity: Walker Animation Station, 10 am–3 pm

Cargill Lounge
Join local animator John Akre at his Stop-Motion Animation Studio. Collaborate with others to create an animated short film about the Walker and Free First Saturday.
