object label Elie Nadelman, Figure (circa 1925) , 1998

Since antiquity, the figure has been the quintessential subject of sculpture. This group of female nudes represents the continuing influence of classical Greek and Roman sculpture and changing interpretations of the body in the 20th century. The figure is reinterpreted as artists combine the classical tradition with the Renaissance style, Expressionism, Abstraction, Primitive Art, and Cubism.
