Sharon Lockhart is a Los Angeles-based photographer whose work leads a recent trend in contemporary photography to, as one critic writes, combine “fact and fiction while melding the nonchalance of snapshots with the artful organization of film stills.”
Influenced by the movie-making industry in her hometown, Lockhart functions almost as would a Hollywood director when setting up shots. She gives her subjects loosely scripted direction that she then captures as still images. The figures in this work seem to be caught in action, although what occurred before or after that moment is deliberately unclear.
