Untitled (1974) combines many aspects of Kounellis' oeuvre: shelves or tables, classical sculptural fragments, fire, and smoke. The plaster casts of heads and other body parts of classical sculptures can be interpreted as forlorn relics of a romanticized past in which society seemed to have been intact. Conversely, these academic relics portray a romanticization of the fragment and suggest that a splintered culture is sufficient or even desirable. These two opposing ideas are often visually addressed by Kounellis.
Also on view in Gallery 5 is Jannis Kounellis' work Untitled (1982).
