DESCRIPTION:Over the centuries\, the kitchen has evolved from a fire pit a

food. But in recent years\, notwithstanding the rise of “the foodie\,”
it has devolved for many to little more than a microwave and a sink. We e
at out or on the run\, and when we do use kitchens\, prep work has been ou
tsourced to backroom workers making convenience foods\, as science and tec
hnology streamline food production from field to table. But go to any gath
ering or party\, and you’ll know exactly where guests and hosts will be
hanging out. \nThis June\, Open Field artists-in-residence Carl and Betsy
DiSalvo (designers and researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technolog
 y) focus on reconceiving the kitchen: its ingredients\, structure\, and fu
nctions. Teaming up with local experts and students\, they will consider t
hat space from an array of vantage points: studio art\, landscape architec
 ture\, food systems\, urban planning\, design\, ceramics\, public health\,
cultural studies\, theater\, engineering\, and more. Participants will de
sign and build a new kind of kitchen—a modular\, multifaceted public “
lab” with tools for use on Open Field and in the city—that welcomes pe
ople for experiences with food\, and in the process sparks new kinds of so
cial interaction and civic engagement. \n\nOn June 21\, bring your favori
te locally produced beverage\, produce\, meat\, or cheese\, which the DiSa

DESCRIPTION:In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the re
st of the world by a sprawling levee\, a six-year-old girl exists on the b
rink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imag
ination\, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the unive
rse until a fierce storm changes her reality. \n\nBenh Zeitlin’s extra
ordinary debut feature exhibits a rare magic and lyricism that is sure to
make it one of the best films of the year. Shot on Super 16mm film and emp
loying non-actors\, Beasts of the Southern Wild was the unequivocal darlin
g of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival\, winning the Grand Jury Prize and ea
rning instant critical acclaim. Manohla Dargis called it “among the best
films to play at the festival in two decades” (New York Times)\, and To
dd McCarthy simultaneously proclaimed it “one of the most striking films
ever to debut at the Sundance Film Festival” (Hollywood Reporter). Sing

window and the unfolding tragedy of the Japanese tsunami on his television
\, Iranian master filmmaker Jafar Panahi\, under house arrest in Tehran\,
reflects on his pending six-year prison sentence and 20-year ban on making

anger of the situation necessitated that the coyly titled This Is Not a Fi

His Past Lives won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2010. The artist is also
making work for documenta 13 in June and is completing his newest film\,
Mekong Hotel. \nWalker film curator Sheryl Mousley calls Weerasethakul an
ideal choice for the multidisciplinary institution's first Walker Channel
commission: “His ability to mix genres—experimental\, narrative\, docu
mentary—is only part of his distinctive vision\,” she says. “He’s
also so accomplished in both old and new media: besides films\, he makes o

across those art forms\, always with amazing results.” \n\nWatch for n

DESCRIPTION:\n“The most beguiling talent to hit the world music scene in
some time.” —Daily Telegraph (UK)\n\nCatch the Midwest debut by Mali
’s new music sensation\, who has been wooing critics and lighting up sta
ges around the world with her radiant voice\, coolly infectious Afro-pop\,
and smoking live band. Fatoumata Diawara\, aka Fatou\, spins elements of
jazz and funk into an exquisitely spare yet sensual folk-rock\, inflecting
it with the rhythms and melodies of Wassoulou\, her ancestral song form.
Likened to her mentor\, Oumou Sangaré\, Fatou has been hailed as the next
female African songwriter of significance\, one who “combines feminist
social conscience with effortless melodic charm” (Financial Times).\nCop
 resented with the Cedar.
