DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Minneapolis Sculpture
Garden\, the Walker delivers a fresh round of mini golf. Garden gnomes ma
squerading as foosball strikers\, a scale model of a French chateau\, maze
s\, gopher holes\, and contours mapped from the course at the legendary Au
gusta National Golf Club are just a few ingredients going into the 2013 ed
ition of the artist-designed course. And purists\, worry not: at least one
hole includes a kitschy\, oversize watering can. \nFor the two eight-ho
le courses\, winning proposals from a group that included architects\, art
 ists\, engineers\, machinists\, and mini-golf aficionados were selected in
January from an open call. Two more holes were designed and produced by s
tudents from a public sculpture class at the University of Minnesota\, led
by artist Chris Larson. \nWalker on the Green: Artist-Designed Mini Golf
 is copresented by mnartists.org.\nCourse Status Updates\nFor weather-relat
ed and course closure information\, call 612.375.7697.\nFree Mini Golf for

artist-designed mini golf for everyone included in the membership.\nPrivat

DESCRIPTION:\n“A rare coming-of-age film.” —Film Stage \n\nAdapted f
rom Tim Tharps’s novel\, The Spectacular Now captures the insecurity and
confusion of adolescence without looking for tidy truths. The film tells

What begins as an unlikely romance becomes a sharp-eyed\, straight-up snap
shot of the heady confusion and haunting passions of youth. \nWritten by S

DESCRIPTION:\n“I have not seen a film as powerful\, surreal\, and fright
ening in at least a decade. The Act of Killing is unprecedented in the his
tory of cinema.” —Werner Herzog \n\nIn this chilling and inventive
documentary\, filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer examine Indonesia’s communis

, and ethnic Chinese were killed. Leaders of the death squads continue to
be celebrated as heroes\, and the director challenged them to reenact thei

ir methods. The result is a cinematic fever dream\, an unsettling journey
deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regi

DESCRIPTION:\n“They have terrifyingly beautiful voices . . . their songs
inexhaustibly multilayered\, fragile\, radiant.” —New York Times \n\n
The bold and boundless art-folk duo CocoRosie makes a rare Minneapolis app
earance with a full ensemble. Sisters Bianca (Coco) and Sierra (Rosie) Cas
ady have developed an international following for their mystical fairy tal
e world created through elaborate costumes\, sets\, and uncategorizable mu
sic. \nShaped by Bianca’s arresting childlike tremor and Sierra’s clas
sically trained operatic voice—and often using vintage\, toy\, and nontr
 aditional instruments—the duo swirls folk\, hip-hop\, opera\, and reggae
into evocative pop songs. Their works are playful yet ominous\, with hard
-hitting truths voiced through twinkling innocence. \nSounding “like two
little Billie Holidays an octave higher if you were on acid in Tokyo in 1
 926” (Jim Jarmusch)\, CocoRosie performs a clublike\, all-standing conce
 rt\, copresented with the Cedar.

DESCRIPTION:\n“I have tried to convey in these pictures...the beauty and
terror of early-21st-century America\, as it clings to past comforts and
gropes for a more sensible future.” —Mitch Epstein\n\nAcclaimed contem
porary cellist/composer Erik Friedlander collaborates with American photog
rapher Mitch Epstein on a musical\, visual\, and oral exploration of what
Epstein terms “our cultural relationship to energy.” \nDrawn from Epst
ein's series of photographs taken on his 5-year\, 25-state investigation o
f US energy production and consumption\, American Power combines new compo
sitions for solo cello with evocative images projected in extremely high r
esolution. Elegant yet spare\, this richly visual and acoustically superb
work serves as metaphorical investigation into the notion of power itself
 and the overlap of electrical\, corporate\, civic\, religious\, environmen
tal\, governmental\, and even artistic power. \nThe evening concludes with
a new and poetic short film and music meditation by the collaborators on
the impact of Hurricane Sandy. \nThis project follows Friedlander’s su

e an aurally adventurous evening of light and shadow that dips deep into d
rone\, ambient\, distortion\, and beyond. The show begins in near darkness
with Tim Hecker’s physical and emotive exploration of noise\, dissonanc
e\, and melody—“foreboding\, abstract pieces in which static and sub-b
ass rumbles open up around slow moving notes and chords\, like fissures in
the earth waiting to swallow them whole” (New York Times). A special co

with field recordings and sampled loops—joins forces with media artist N
ate Boyce and his hallucinatory computer-generated films for an eye-poppin

series The Kingdom by Lars von Trier\, American soap operas\, the real-lif

DESCRIPTION:\n“With a background in classical piano and a love for every
thing electronic\, Bell’s music is her own confection—a world of layer
ed beats\, swirling synth textures\, and sometimes poppy\, sometimes haunt

ancient folk traditions to modern club music\, Origin/Outcome is a celebr
ation of the hot-blooded human vernacular—the music to which we dance\,
 eat\, grieve\, and revel. Moscow-born\, Brooklyn-based composer/performer
Olga Bell (Dirty Projectors) unfolds a two-part evening of compelling new
sounds featuring an international consort of vocalists\, a chamber ensembl
e composed of Twin Cities– and Brooklyn-based musicians\, and dazzling p
rojections by video artist Alejandro Crawford (MGMT). \nThe evening opens
with the world premiere of Bell’s seven-movement song cycle Krai\, a ric
hly imagined sonic love letter to her Russian homeland. The night also con
tains the debut of Nothankyou\, her cross-Atlantic partnership with Britis
h musician Tom Vek\, “a marvelous new pop star in the classical mold”
(Guardian) whose self-coined “beat-rock” emphasizes angular compositio
ns that groove. Respected vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian
(former Dirty Projectors) contributes throughout.\nCopresented with the S

DESCRIPTION:\n“A fleet-footed big band\, sliding and swaggering through
galactic R&amp\;B\, brawny jazz and electric funk like a Sun Ra-size spin
on Miles Davis’ On the Corner band.” —Rolling Stone\n\nBurnt Sugar\,
the 19-member Afrocentric jazz/funk collective\, lays claim to and subver
ts the Steely Dan songbook in a program curated and conducted by guitar he
ro Vernon Reid (Living Color). Of the wildly diverse palette and players i
n the New York ensemble\, Arkestra leader Greg Tate says\, “Burnt Sugar
got the nerve to claim Sly Stone\, Morton Feldman\, Billie Holiday\, Jimi
Hendrix\, and Jean Luc Ponty as progenitors. Our player-ranks include know
 n Irish fiddlers\, AACM refugees\, Afro-punk rejects\, unrepentant be-bopp
 ers\, feminist rappers\, jitterbugging doo-woppers\, frankly loud funk-a-t
eers\, and rodeo stars of the digital divide.” Look for heady and deeply
