Volunteer/Part-time/Temporary

The Walker is hosting a year-long residency with artist Fritz Haeg beginning in January 2013 and concluding in November 2013. A core component of Haeg’s project and practice is the creation of edible gardens. Two of the three part residency takes place in the garden: Edible Estate #16, part of Haeg’s ongoing initiative to replace the front lawn with productive gardens; and, Foraging Circle, a newly planted area of edible and medicinal perennial plants in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Duration: May 1 - August 15, 2013 (ending date flexible)

Hours: Average of 10 hours per week; frequent evenings and weekends

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the installation of Edible Estates #16 over Memorial Day weekend, 2013 (May 24-27). Work with artist and Residency Coordinator to coordinate logistics of installation including organizing volunteers, loading tools, and organizing plant material.

  • Assist volunteers with planting of the Edible Estate garden (residential front lawn) and Foraging Circle (Minneapolis Sculpture Garden).

  • Assist in the coordination, donation, and purchase of gardening equipment and plants.

  • Assist artist, Residency Coordinator, and Walker staff in ongoing documentation and writing about the project on the Walker’s website and social media outlets.

  • Along with Residency Coordinator, Curator of Public Practice and Walker staff, respond to and coordinate community requests and related events. (i.e., host informational booth at local Farmers’ Markets)

  • Assist in the maintenance and harvesting of the Foraging Circle in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

  • Assist with facilitation of Free First Saturday and Target Free Thursday Night programming. (optional)

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualified applicants will have interest in cultivating art as a catalyst for social change in the realm of ecological and domestic issues; experience in urban farming with knowledge of horticulture and native plants preferred; good interpersonal skills; some experience coordinating public or education based events. Knowledge of social media technologies including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. Google etc; good written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently. Must be willing to physically garden and able to lift up to 40 lbs. Patience, a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and adaptability required.
