Diamond Jubilee: Avant Garden Supporters Make the Evening Sparkle

As summer came to a close, the Walker welcomed nearly 800 guests to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden for the annual Avant Garden benefit event. This year’s late-summer soirée kicked off the Walker Art Center’s 75th-anniversary “Diamond Jubilee.” Although it was more than 125 years ago when lumber baron T. B. Walker built a room onto his Minneapolis house, mounted his 20 favorite paintings on the walls, and opened his door to the community, it was in the year 1940 that the Walker transitioned from private gallery to public art center. This singular historical moment was celebrated on September 13 by patrons, members, partygoers, and art-world notables with signature cocktails and gourmet fare, exclusive auction items, a performance by the New Standards, tunes by DJ Sye Young, and dancing until midnight.

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and all who attended, Avant Garden generated proceeds of more than $625,000 in support of artistic and educational programming at the Walker Art Center. This year’s art auction, which featured work by Jim Hodges, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, and others, was our most successful ever. Special thanks are due to the Avant Garden 2014 committee and co-chairs Amy Kern and Wim Stocks.

Be sure to save the date for Avant Garden 2015 on Saturday, September 12!
