While leaves have already fallen, it wasn’t long ago that the Walker welcomed more than 900 guests to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden to celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2013 and the opening of Claes Oldenburg: The Sixties, all as part of our annual Avant Garden benefit event.
Attended by patrons, members, partygoers, Oldenburg, and other art-world notables, this late-summer soirée featured signature cocktails and gourmet fare, exclusive auction items, and dancing well past midnight. Through the generosity of our sponsors and all who attended, we are delighted to report that the Walker raised more than $420,000 net to support programming and the ongoing conservation of Garden sculptures, including the iconic Spoonbridge and Cherry, co-created by Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen.
“We are truly grateful for the wonderful turnout, and for the incredible support of our sponsors and friends,” says Walker executive director Olga Viso. “With so many there celebrating with us, I was ecstatic and honored that Claes could see how well-loved his work and the Garden are by our community, and that he could share in this moment, too. It couldn’t have been a better evening.”
