Press Releases Walker Art Center Presents Area Premiere of Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s Our Daily Bread

Ongoing Series Features Area Premieres of New Films

“The film’s formal elegance, moral underpinning, and intellectually stimulating point of view also make it essential. Takes us inside worlds of wonder and terror.” —New York Times

The Walker Art Center presents the area premiere of Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s Our Daily Bread, Friday–Sunday, March 23–25 (Friday, 7:30 pm; Saturday, 2 and 7:30 pm; Sunday, 2 pm), the latest film in the series Premieres: First Look, an ongoing presentation of area film premieres that gives audiences an early look at tomorrow’s critically acclaimed classics. With no dialogue and striking cinematography, Our Daily Bread reveals a fascinating system—affecting everyone— that is at once exacting in its efficiency, yet incredibly devoid of humanity and the pleasure associated with eating. Director Geyrhalter was given unprecedented access to the industrialized and impersonal world of contemporary food production, and his dynamic images reveal the soulless technology that fulfills our desire for a vast variety of food at cheap prices. 2005, Austria, 35mm, 92 minutes.

Following the 2 pm screening on Saturday, March 24, the Walker will host a panel discussion about the issues raised in the film. Participants will include Kevin M. Elfering, Director of the Dairy and Food Inspection Division of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture; Dana Jackson, Senior Program Associate of the Land Stewardship Project; and one or two youth representatives from the Youth Farm and Market Project.

Tickets to these screenings are $8 ($6 Walker members) and are available at walkerart.org/tickets or by calling 612.375.7600. The screenings take place in the Walker Cinema.
