A reemergence of Latin American films on the international scene in recent years has resulted in a wealth of vivid, groundbreaking work. The Walker Art Center’s Cinemateca film series begins its run of screenings on the last Friday of each month with a new, award-winning work from Brazil, Karim Aïnouz’s Love for Sale: Suely in the Sky, on Friday, January 25, 7:30 pm.
Abandoned with her young son in a remote Brazilian village, a 21-year-old woman determines to move forward and gain independence by raffling herself off as “one night in paradise.” Her emotional journey is anchored by the standout performance of Hermila Guedes, who won numerous international best actress awards for her feisty portrayal of a woman struggling to raise her infant in a rural town in northern Brazil. An official Selection of the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. 2006, 35mm, in Portuguese with English subtitles, 88 minutes.
Tickets to Love for Sale: Suely in the Sky are $8 ($6 Walker members) and are available at walkerart.org/tickets or by calling 612.375.7600. The screening takes place in the Walker Cinema.
The Cinemateca series continues on Friday, February 29, with The Sugar Curtain (El Telón de Azúcar) from Cuba, and Friday, March 28, with Mutum from Brazil.
