Walker Art Center tours in July offer visitors a firsthand look at its latest exhibition, Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay, opening July 11. Synonymous with the building of industries and cultures, clay also has a tactile and earthen sensuousness that makes it a medium with which artists have long created forms, objects, and ornaments. Organized by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania, Dirt on Delight presents works ranging from modestly scaled pots to large sculptures that cross a spectrum of art, craft, and outsider practices.
Guided tours of Dirt on Delight take place July 18, 19, and 30. Visitors can also explore the exhibition during a July 16 Sound Bites tour, focusing on the work of featured artist Nicole Cherubini. Sound Bites tours are held on select Thursday evenings at 6:30 and 7 pm and illuminate an artist or work of art from the Walker’s world-class collection or one of its special exhibitions. The Walker offers two additional Sound Bites tours on the exhibition The Quick and the Dead (July 2) and on Claes Oldenburg and Coojse van Bruggen’s Spoonbridge and Cherry (July 23).
July tours also focus on the exhibition Tomás Saraceno: Lighter than Air (July 9 and 24), in which the artist looks to scientific principles and technological innovations to push the conventions of art and architecture and imagine sustainable communities and new models for social interactions. Also, tours are offered for The Quick and the Dead (July 12, 17, 23), a show that expands beyond the here and now, reaffirming conceptual art’s ability to engage some of the deeper mysteries and questions of our lives. The exhibition brings together more than 90 works, juxtaposing a core group from the 1960s and ‘70s with more recent examples that might only loosely qualify as conceptual.
Gallery admission is $10 adults; $8 seniors (65+); $6 students/teens (with ID); and free to Walker members and children 12 and under. Admission free with a ticket to a same-day Walker event, $4 with a ticket stub up to six days after an event. Gallery admission is free to all every Thursday evening from 5–9 pm and on the first Saturday of each month.
