Press Releases Walker Art Center Presents Two Programs of Voices of Strength: Contemporary Dance and Theater by Women from Africa

Minneapolis, September 25, 2012— Stylistically diverse and universally resonant, Voices of Strength showcases works by five fierce director/choreographers from across Africa. The two-evening “mini-festival” offers audiences a special chance to see a new generation of African artists who are making a mark on contemporary performance around the world.

From dance rooted in and showing connections to tradition, to cutting edge performance that makes satirical use of classical conventions, the choreographers in Voices of Strength employ humor, irony, poignancy and power to reference personal obstacles as well as political and social themes, as they articulate women’s struggles toward empowerment.
