Target Thursday Lights

July 11, 18, and 25
9 – 11:30 pm
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden

It’s dusk. You’re walking through the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and see the outlines and shadows of trees and sculptures. But what are those things? Mason jars, and they’re glowing. As you walk up and peer at one, you see it contains swerving wire filaments that look like the trails of fireflies. As you move closer, light patterns pulse and become livelier. Suddenly, the “fireflies” escape their glass confines and take flight, swirling to the top of the Target Corporation building and joining the colored lights created there by other emancipated lightning bugs.

Designed by Target for the Garden’s 25th anniversary, this interactive display will be available for ooh-ing and ahh-ing on Target Free Thursday Nights in July.

World Listening Day
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, 5 – 9 pm

If the whole world listens, what will it hear? Find out at the Walker’s observance of World Listening Day, where you can contemplate the sonic environment of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden through a range of aural experiments, including a listening meditation, a sound scavenger hunt, and an opportunity to hear how pop music sounds to a fish.

Screening: The Turin Horse Directed by Béla Tarr
Walker Cinema, 7:00 pm, Free
Copresented by Midway Contemporary Art

“A rich, deeply moving story, a movie of incredible mystery and power that ranks among the director’s finest works.” —Indiewire

With the book Béla Tarr: The Time After by Jacques Rancière coming out this summer with an English translation, the launch by its publisher, Univocal, and Midway Contemporary Art will be celebrated with a screening of The Turin Horse by Béla Tarr (the subject of a 2007 Walker Regis Dialogue and Retrospective.) The film stems from an apocryphal story about the cause of Friedrich Nietzsche’s madness: while vacationing in Turin in 1889, the German philosopher saw from afar a man mercilessly whipping his horse, and ran across a square in desperation to fling his arms around the animal. Afterward, Nietzsche broke down and spent the last 10 years of his life in silence.

The Turin Horse, conceived and written with Tarr’s frequent collaborator, László Krasznahorkai, uses the parable of the horse to demonstrate that actions and gestures resonate long after their actual occurrence. Employing the epic shots, grimly beautiful black-and-white cinematography, gracefully orchestrated camerawork, and moody yet subtle sound design for which he has become renowned, Tarr has created an overwhelmingly relentless evocation of what he calls the “heaviness of human existence” as it winds down, day by day. 2011, 146 minutes.
