Families can experiment with all kinds of ways to have fun at the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event
A Laboratory of Ideas
from 10 am–3 pm Saturday, November 1. Featured events include a Kids Disco and Light Show where visitors can get their groove on in the McGuire Theater; a drop-in gallery activity in the exhibition Statements: Beuys, Flavin, Judd; art-making activities inspired by Joseph Beuys’ multiples and Dan Flavin’s fluorescent light sculptures; and screenings of short experimental films that animate light and shape in unexpected ways.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from 10 am–3 pm. Gallery admission is free from 10 am–5 pm on Free First Saturday.

Learn about the art and ideas of artists Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, and Donald Judd at this fun-filled day.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Make a Multiple, 10 am–3 pm
Cargill Lounge
Joseph Beuys worked with everyday materials that he associated with important moments of his life (felt, bottles, bandages) to create multiples. Assemble and draw found objects that have special meaning for you in this activity led by artist-instructor Cindy Starkweather-Nelson.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Radiance Revealed, 10 am–3 pm
Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab
Join artist-instructor Mary Rivard to make sculptures inspired by artist Dan Flavin that will reveal the effects of color and light in space.
Dance: Kids Disco and Light Show, 11 am–3 pm
McGuire Theater
Step into a colorful situation in the McGuire Theater, where a light show and the musical selections of DJ Ronny D set the stage for some dervish dancing!
Gallery Activity: A Science Experiment, 12 noon–2 pm
Friedman Gallery
Meet a Walker tour guide for a drop-in gallery activity to take a look at ways that mathematics, electricity, and nature are used by artists in the exhibition Statements: Beuys, Flavin, Judd.
Film: Reel Trials, 12 noon and 2 pm
Cinema
Stop into the Cinema for a screening of short experimental films from the Walker’s Ruben Film and Video Study Collection that animate light and shape in unexpected ways.
