Prepare to Take Off for a Day of Family Fun at the Walker Art Center's June Free First Saturday
Fasten your seatbelts and get ready to be launched into a day of fun at Flights of Fantasy, the Walker Art Center’s Free First Saturday event from 10 am–5 pm Saturday, June 3. Featured events include a performance by the Twin Cities’ own new-music force, Zeitgeist; a gallery crawl looking at the fiction, folklore, and fables that have inspired many artists in the Walker galleries; art lab activities making puppets and pop-up books; a story reading of the book Pinocchio the Boy: Incognito in Collodi by Lane Smith; and a screening of Eduardo Schuldt’s Pirates in the Pacific, the first-ever 3-D animated feature from Peru.
Activities are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Gallery Crawl: Mythmakers
Meet in the Bazinet Garden Lobby, 10 am–2 pm
Fiction, folklore, and fables have inspired many artists. Listen as tour guides bring these stories to life right before your eyes.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Puppet Power
Cargill Lounge, 10 am–3 pm
Craft your very own puppet with model magic and colored wire. Activity led by Christina Alderman.
Performance: Musical Tales with Zeitgeist
William and Nadine McGuire Theater, 11 am
Kids and families control the sound effects and help narrate a fairy tale reenacted by members of Zeitgeist, the Twin Cities’ own new-music force. Stick around as they present a scene from their world premiere of Pine Eyes, a dynamic mixture of music, words, and film based on The Adventures of Pinocchio.
Art-Making for the Entire Family: Fact or Fiction?
Star Tribune Foundation Art Lab, 11 am–4 pm
Design a pop-up book inspired by the story of Pinocchio filled with whoppers and truthful tales. Led by book artist Cori Sherlock.
Story-Reading: Pinocchio the Boy: Incognito in Collodi by Lane Smith
Lecture Room, 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 pm
This tale of Pinocchio picks up from the moment the puppet’s wish is granted and he becomes a boy. Rediscover the hardships and victories of a wooden toy turned real during a reading of this modernized classic.
On the Big Screen: Pirates in the Pacific, directed by Eduardo Schuldt
Cinema, 1 pm
In this first-ever 3-D animated feature from Peru, a boy accidentally falls through a time window that sends him on a swashbuckling journey back to the 17th century. 2005, Peru, in Spanish with English subtitles, 78 minutes.
