Walker Performing Arts Presents: Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker & Salva Sanchis / Rosas

Revered Belgian dance master Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Spanish-born choreographer Salva Sanchis present a new quartet set to John Coltrane’s essential 1965 album, A Love Supreme. Meticulous form and raw energy combine as each of the four male dancers reflects one of the recording’s instrumentalists: Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones. This interplay is translated into a dance in which the choreographers seamlessly interweave improvisation and composition. Since its premiere in February 2017, critics have heralded this as a not-to-be missed dance masterwork. Performances are Thursday, October 12th and Friday October 13th at 8pm in the William and Nadine McGuire Theater.
About Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker
Born in Belgium, studying music in her early childhood, De Keersmaeker shifted towards dance in 1980. It wasn’t until then that De Keersmaeker created her first choreographic work, Asch after studying dance at Mudra School in Brussels, Belgium and Tisch School of the Arts in New York. In another breakthrough, a few years later De Keersmaeker founded dance company Rosas, in the midst of creating her piece Rosas danst Rosas. In the 90s-2000s, while Rosas resided in the Brussels opera house De Munt/La Monnaie, De Keersmaeker directed several operas that have since been performed by companies all over the world. De Keersmaeker also established the school of Performing Arts Research and Training Studios (P.A.R.T.S.) in association with De Munt/La Monnaie in 1995. She was recently invited to direct Mozart’s Cosí fan tutte for the Paris Opera in early 2017. In a 1986 review, The New York Times called De Keersmaeker a rare breed of choreographers who can make her audience think and feel at the same time. In a 2017 review, The New York Times described her choreography as having immense precision and accredited her with the ability to bridge difficulty and delight.
About Salva Sanchis
Spanish Choreographer Salva (Salvador) studied theater at Barcelona’s Institut del Teatre. Sanchis moved to Brussels to study at De Keersmaeker’s performing arts school P.A.R.T.S, graduating in 1998. Since then, he has produced over 20 choreographic works, such as Radical Light (2016), Islands (2014) and Objects in mirror are closer than they appear (2008), which toured Brussels and abroad. Sanchis was a performer with Rosas before becoming a guest choreographer, collaborating with De Keersmaeker and signing his own works. Along with being an artistic director for dance company Kunst/Werk with Marc Vanrunxt, Sanchis is also a faculty member and program coordinator for P.A.R.T.S.
