Walker at Home Digital Content Series Offers Online Drawing Class, Local Music for Silent Films, and Merce Cunningham in the Archives
This week the Walker presents a life drawing class via Zoom, surrealist silent films with musical scores from local favorites Marijuana Deathsquads, and a loving look at the many sides of dance icon Merce Cunningham in celebration of his birthday. We invite our audiences to draw, watch, and even dance along … until our doors are open again.

Thursday, April 16, 7–9 PM
Flex your creative muscles with artist and instructor Leslie Barlow in this online life drawing class! All you need is a piece of paper and a pencil, but a representative from Wet Paint will give us a quick rundown of other household items that double as art supplies.

Watch: Three Hans Richter Films Scored by Marijuana Deathsquads
In 2017, the Walker commissioned Marijuana Deathsquads to create new soundtracks for a trio of avant-garde films by Hans Richter as part of the ongoing summer favorite Sound for Silents. The Minneapolis-based supergroup is led by Ryan Olson (Poliça, Gayngs) and features musicians Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Benson Ramsey (The Pines), and Channy Leaneagh (Poliça).
With the center closed during the coronavirus pandemic, we share for the first time online the three films and their commissioned scores—best experienced at home with a full-screen and the volume turned up—as a reminder of time spent together experiencing art, then and to come.

Watch: Happy Birthday, Merce Cunningham
In celebration of Merce Cunningham’s 101st birthday on April 16, we focus this week on Merce and movement. The legendary choreographer’s forty-year relationship with the Walker began in 1963, and after his passing, his dance company’s archive found a home in the museum. Watch our mini-documentary, then dive deeper to explore his dance in action, catch interviews, see the whimsical costumes that animated his work, and hear from the new generation of dancers he inspired.
