Christine Sun Kim: Art of Communication

Back to Reader

Now on view in the Walker Art Center’s galleries, Christine Sun Kim: All Day All Night is the first major museum survey of work by artist and activist Christine Sun Kim (US, b. 1980). Co-organized by the Walker and the Whitney Museum of American Art, the exhibition examines how Kim’s practice utilizes sound, language, and the complexities of communication—from her early career performance documentation to drawings, videos, sculptures, and recent site-responsive murals. Drawing on both her native American Sign Language (ASL) and written English, Kim has produced a body of work that is perceptive, poetic, humorous, and political.

Since its premiere in New York in winter of 2025, All Day All Night has received significant attention from the art world, public, and press. Flagged as a “must-see” experience, critics praise the show for the artist’s innovative translation of Deaf lived experience into visual art, combining wit and incisive commentary on language and sound systems. As noted by the New York Times, “Christine Sun Kim shines light on Deaf culture and measures sonic experience beyond the ear.”

The Walker and the Whitney are enormously grateful to four national foundation partners for their significant support in realizing this ambitious project: the Ford Foundation, Teiger Foundation, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Leaders in arts funding, these foundations are committed to advancing equity, fostering cross-cultural dialogue, and lifting up the voices of artists and communities that are underrepresented in the cultural sector and beyond.

For the exhibition’s presentation in Minneapolis, the Walker is incredibly grateful to Kevin and Rosemary McNeely and their daughter Hannah Rose for their generous support through the KHR McNeely Family Foundation. Their support reflects both a deep enthusiasm for Christine Sun Kim’s work and a strong commitment to the Twin Cities, helping ensure that ambitious cultural projects are accessible and meaningful for Walker audiences.
