Kim Tong

Describe your job in ten words or less.

Hospitality, tour guide, interpreter, curator, custodian, moderator, firefighter, hedonism, empathy, glue. It’s a balancing act.

What’s the best part about working at the Walker?

Working within the confines of and being surrounded by art and being afforded a beautiful view of the Minneapolis skyline from Esker Grove’s patio. Plus there’s the added bonus of working with friends for whom I have the utmost respect.

What do you like most about being a Walker member?

When I’m not on the job, I love to travel and experience other cultures, so the reciprocal museum membership benefits (available at the Friend-level and above) are extremely exciting.

Is there a relationship between the Esker Grove menu and the Walker’s collection?

I think there are a lot of similarities. On a basic level, they are both contemporary and they create an experience. They also can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Our chefs respect their materials, just as artists do, placing elements together to invoke the senses—except you can eat the pieces and drink the sculptures.
