A group of Deaf children playing charades opens the formally provocative Code Unknown. Set throughout Paris, the film follows a series of encounters between different characters whose lives intersect in moments of misunderstanding. At the end, Haneke’s film punctuates his tense narrative about the multilayered complexities of communication. 2000, Digital, France, in French with English Subtitles/Open Captions, 118 min.

Michael Haneke is an Oscar-winning Austrian film director and screenwriter. The Seventh Continent, Haneke’s first feature film, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989. He is best known for films such as Funny Games (1997), Code Unknown (2000), Caché (Hidden) (2005), The White Ribbon (2009), and Amour (2012). The Piano Teacher, based on Elfriede Jelinek’s novel of the same name, won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, while Caché (Hidden) (2005) won him the prize for best director. Haneke is known for his precise, unsentimental view of contemporary European society, the way he conducts his actors, and his uncompromising, partly distressing narrative constructions. He has been teaching Directing at the Vienna Film Academy since 2002.
This film has open captions. The introduction will have ASL interpretation.
Assistive Technology
Assistive listening devices (ALDs) are available at the Main Lobby desk for most film screenings. ALDs play the film’s audio track through headphones. Seating
For seating that doesn’t require the use of stairs, enter the Cinema through the left-side door. Our accessible seating is situated at the back of the house, with clear views of the screen and stage. The area is elevated slightly above the tiered seating and can accommodate two wheelchairs. As space is limited, reservations are encouraged. Restrooms
Accessible restrooms near the Cinema are located in two areas. There are two all-gender, single-user restrooms with manual doors to the left of the restaurant, across from the Cinema. There are gendered, multi-stall restrooms behind the Main Lobby desk, accessible by elevator (level LL).
Parking
Vineland Place parking meters provide four-hour options for vehicles with disability license plates or certificates.
Accessible parking in the underground ramp is designated near the elevator and entrance. To get to the Cinema from the parking ramp, follow the P1 (level 1) hallway (look for the large “WALKER” sign) into the Main Lobby.
Services such as Metro Mobility should be instructed to drop off and pick up passengers at 725 Vineland Place. There is a disability transfer zone by the main entrance on Vineland Place.
