Charlotte, a struggling writer of erotica searching for inspiration, invites her recently widowed mother, Catherine, to move in with her. With Catherine’s literal and figurative baggage in tow, the apartment quickly devolves into claustrophobic clutter. Though widely recognized for her weighty narratives and documentaries, Chantal Akerman also frequently embraced comedy; her first work, Saute ma ville (Blow Up My Town), for instance, notably embraces a Chaplin-esque sense of tragicomedy. Alongside Akerman’s D’est and Sud in this series, Demain on déménage showcases a different facet Claire Atherton and Akerman’s collaboration. 2003, France/Belgium, DCP, in French with English subtitles, 110 min.
